The Five Pillars of Islam
The five foundations of a Muslim's life, explained simply.

1 The Shahada: declaration of faith
The first pillar is the Shahada: «There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger». With these words we say that we believe in one God, who created everything, and that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us His way.
2 Salah: the prayer
The second pillar is prayer. A Muslim prays five times a day: Fajr (at dawn), Dhuhr (at midday), Asr (in the afternoon), Maghrib (at sunset) and Isha (in the evening). Before praying we do wudu, the ablution, to be clean.
3 Zakat: helping those in need
The third pillar is Zakat. Those who have enough money give a small part of it to the poor every year. In this way we learn that everything we have is a gift from Allah and that it is beautiful to share it with others.
4 Sawm: fasting in Ramadan
The fourth pillar is fasting in the month of Ramadan. Adults do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset. Children can try fasting for a few hours to practise. Ramadan teaches us patience and to think of those who are hungry. At the end we celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
5 Hajj: the pilgrimage to Makkahالحج
The fifth pillar is Hajj, the pilgrimage to Makkah, made at least once in a lifetime by those who are healthy and can afford it. Millions of Muslims from all over the world meet around the Ka'ba, dressed simply: all equal before Allah.
