1 The Hijra and the Islamic calendarالهجرة والتقويم الهجري
In the year 622 the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions left Makkah and moved to Madinah, where they were welcomed with joy. This journey is called the Hijra. The Islamic calendar begins with that very year and follows the months of the moon.
في عام 622 م هاجر النبي محمد ﷺ وأصحابه من مكة إلى المدينة، فاستقبلهم أهلها بفرح. وتُسمى هذه الرحلة الهجرة، ومنها يبدأ التقويم الهجري الذي يتبع الأشهر القمرية.
2 The House of Wisdomبيت الحكمة
In Baghdad, more than a thousand years ago, there was the House of Wisdom: a great library where scholars of many origins translated and wrote books. The mathematician Al-Khwarizmi wrote a famous book that gave us the word «algebra», and his name gave us the word «algorithm».
في بغداد قبل أكثر من ألف عام كان بيت الحكمة، مكتبة كبيرة يترجم فيها العلماء من أصول مختلفة ويؤلفون الكتب. وكتب العالم الخوارزمي كتابًا مشهورًا جاءت منه كلمة «الجبر»، ومن اسمه جاءت كلمة «الخوارزمية».
3 Islam in Sicilyالإسلام في صقلية
From 827 and for more than two centuries Sicily was ruled by Muslims. Palermo became a large and rich city. Crops such as citrus fruits and sugar cane were introduced or spread, and many Sicilian and Italian words come from Arabic, such as «zucchero» (sugar), «arancia» (orange) and «magazzino» (warehouse).
منذ عام 827 م ولأكثر من قرنين حكم المسلمون صقلية، فأصبحت باليرمو مدينة كبيرة غنية. وانتشرت زراعات مثل الحمضيات وقصب السكر، وكثير من الكلمات الإيطالية أصلها عربي مثل «سكر» و«مخزن».
